"We must all fear evil men. But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good men."
I haven't made a single political blog post - it feels trite and futile - but I am so disgusted by the Trump administration's blatant hatred, bigotry, anti-intellectualism, and disregard for American values, that I can't stay silent any longer. As vehemently as we may renounce Trump's actions in our thoughts and private conversations, that is not enough. It is not enough to merely shake our heads in disapproval as long as we are relatively unaffected, while our fellow citizens and upstanding people of the world are having their hopes, dreams, and families decimated. We are witnessing the rise of something grossly nefarious yet dangerously insidious, and now is the time to take material action, before it is too late. This is what pre-WWII Germany looked like, and it would be our indifference that takes us across the brink. That's not hyperbole; just two years ago we laughed at the idea of Trump even running for office, and on Friday our government tried to foist a Muslim Ban upon us. Corrupt corporate CEO's are being given cabinet positions, an avowed white-nationalist is to sit on the security council, and the US is pulling funding from the UN and climate change initiatives.
These are dangerous times, and to my friends like me who mean well but are hesitant to take action just yet, I urge you to wake up and do something now. Here are some concrete steps you can take:
1. Set up a recurring donation to Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, the NRDC, or your other favorite charity. Every bit counts, and I am sure you can manage something.
2. Call your senators. It takes just a few minutes, here's a guide (https://www.bustle.com/p/how-to-call-your-representative-ab…), and here's a list of senators who have remained silent on the ban (https://docs.google.com/…/1hSGjyWJZIQJpGz4V2ftX_q…/htmlview…).
3. Vote in your local, state, and national elections. Dems absolutely must regain the house on November 6th, 2018.
4. Phonebank and volunteer. So many of us immediately disregarded and denounced Trump supporters as bad people that we denied ourselves the chance to engage them in meaningful discussion and potentially change their minds. Most of them are decent, but misguided folks. Find your nearest swing district here (https://swingleft.org/) and help the Dems regain the house.
Blog posts are not enough. But if nothing else, let this post serve as a show of solidarity with my friends of all races, faiths, nationalities, gender identities, sexual orientations, and socioeconomic positions that I see you and I stand with you. #resist #notmypresident
