Via Frittata
I'll be picking up my bike in Croatia shortly, but first I'm exploring Italy and Slovenia with some of my more pedestrian friends. Things got off to a rough start with severe food poisoning that forced me to miss my flight to Italy (and Nik's wedding). But 3 days later I was back on a plane, and antibiotics, to meet up with David, John, and Nick to conquer something that had long been on my bucket list: a via ferrata (Latin for "iron way"). Originally laid to enable soldiers to traverse the Dolomites in WWI, this network of cables and ladders is now available for idiots like us to demonstrate our "big balls and tiny amygdalae" as John would say. I expected a breath taking but fairly tame adventure, but what we got was 3 days of butt puckering insanity. Thanks to - or perhaps in spite of - our fearless guide Mauro, the presence of whose amygdala I seriously doubt, we made it out alive. Next stop: Bologna.
